The Toggenburg
The
Toggenburg was once the most
numerous dairy breed in America, it originated in the Toggenburg valley
in the Swiss canton of St. Gallen, and is reputed to be the oldest and
purest off all breeds . The claim is that Toggenburgs have been pure for
over 300 years. The "Togg" is the smallest of the dairy breeds, it is
compact , sturdy , and vigorous and adapts well to all climates and
type of holding. They are known for their high well attached udders and
high production , however they tend to have low butterfat. The United
States Production record was held by a Toggenburg,
Puritan Jon's
Jennifer II, with 5,750 lbs. (2,608 kg) of milk with 191 lbs (86.6
kg) butterfat. She was the first goat ever to produce over 5,000 lbs.
This record held until 1981 when a new champion
Donnie's Pride Lois
produced 6,416 lbs (2,910 kg).
