The Alpine is a medium to large Swiss breed of goat that was first imported into California in 1922. They have excellent production and long lactations which hold up well in hot weather. They are hardy and adaptable and thrive in any climate. The Alpine is second in popularity to the Nubian in Canada and the U.S. It is very strong genetically. The Alpine is actually made up of several varieties: British, Oberhasli and Rock Alpines. The Oberhasli , once called the Swiss Alpine, has been granted a herd book in the U.S. and is quickly gaining popularity as a breed.

       The French Alpine can be any color or combination of colors.
       The following are the main color patterns:

  • Cou blanc : white front quarters, black hindquarters, black or grey markings on head
  • Cou noir : black front quarters, white hindquarters
  • Cou clair : front quarters are tan, saffron, off-white or shading to grey with black hindquarters
  • Sundgau : black with white markings such as under body, facial stripes
  • Chamoise : brown or bay, characteristic markings are black on face, dorsal stripe, feet and legs,
                       with perhaps a martingdale over withers and down to chest
  • Two-tone Chamoisee : light front quarters with brown or gray hindquarters Pied : potted or mottled
  • Broken : a specific color pattern that has been broken with another color being banded or splashed,
                   etc. (e.g. broken chamoisee)
